Sclerotherapy
for Varicose & Spider VeinsSclerotherapy
FAQs What
is Sclerotherapy? Sclerotherapy
is the treatment of unnecessary, unsightly spider veins and small varicose veins
in the legs by injecting a "sclerosing" solution directly in those veins
with a very fine needle. What
happens to those veins after they are injected? They gradually disappear
and are reabsorbed by the body over the next several months. But
don't I need those veins for better circulation? Those veins are not only
unsightly and sometimes painful, but are totally unnecessary since the deep circulation
of the leg can easily handle all venous return from the lower extremities. Then
why do they occur? Prolonged standing, hormones and childbearing in women,
and heredity all play a role in their development. Is
the treatment successful? 50-90% of the veins can be removed during a series
of treatments.
Is
the treatment painful? Because
of a special "sclerosing" agent and the extremely fine needle that we
use, our patients have experienced little or no pain. Are
there any complications? There may be some swelling, redness, bruising,
and itching or tenderness that usually lasts only a few hours to a few days. sometimes
the vein becomes dark brown after treatment and this normally clears but can last
several months. Rarely, small painful ulcers which are easily healed, inflammation
of treated vessels or small blood clots may form. Are
there any serious complications? In extremely rare instances, a blood clot
may form in the deep veins of the leg and can pas to the lungs. By wearing support
hosiery for 3 days after the treatment, exercising immediately after the treatment
and for the next 3 days, and by aggressively treating any inflammation or the
veins after treatment, this complication can be virtually eliminated. For
