Smoothbeam Laser for Acne

Smoothbeam for Acne
Clear skin is right around the corner. Treat acne with Smoothbeam - the only laser clinically proven to target acne at the root cause. Acne is an inflammatory skin condition affecting the sebaceous follicles - follicles containing oil-producing sebaceous glands. Each follicle contains a small, vellus hair and a sebaceous gland. Acne is most common on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back, and chest where there is a high concentration of sebaceous follicles. Symptoms of acne include blackheads, whiteheads, red spots, nodules, and cysts. Acne affects 80% of the human population with almost no person passing through adolescence without experiencing some form of a blemish or pimple.

Recent studies show 98% clearance of acne lesions after 4 treatments done at one month intervals, with no recurrence after 6 months. Although the use of lasers is a new approach in treating acne, lasers have been safely used on various skin conditions for many years.

The Smoothbeam can also be used to treat deep acne scars. Because collagen is at the same depth in skin as sebaceous glands, and is comprised of mostly water, it is also a target of the Smoothbeam. The slight dermal injury caused by the laser light stimulates the production and deposition of newly organized collagen beneath the skin resulting in significant improvement in the appearance of these scars.

Patients will find the treatments are affordable, ranging between $150.00 and $450.00 for the face, and more for the back, depending on the size of the area.

What causes Acne?
Acne is clearly linked to natural hormonal increases, especially during puberty. These hormonal increases are believed to cause an increase in the size and sebum output of the sebaceous glands in the follicles. As the skin sheds dead cells, a process called keratinization occurs, blocking the opening of the follicle. As oil production increases, the pore becomes plugged. Bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes - P.acnes) thrive on the sebum in the plugged follicle and multiply. This condition makes itself manifest in the formation of a small pimple. If the pore stays open, it leads to the formation of a blackhead. If the pore closes, a whitehead forms. As the p.acnes multiply, the follicle can rupture, leading to severe inflammation and the formation of deep cysts.

Frequently Asked Questions about Smoothbeam for Acne

Q: What kind of acne does the Smoothbeam treat?
Both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions have been successfully treated on areas of the back. Acne on the back is reported to be resistant to many existing therapies. Further research is currently being gathered on facial acne and will be available in coming months.

Q: How does Smoothbeam Acne Treatment compare to existing treatments?
There are no unusual side-effects or adverse reaction to Smoothbeam treatment for acne. Drug therapy for the treatment of acne has a well-publicized side-effect profile. Accutane, for instance, is known to cause birth defects if one becomes pregnant while using the drug. It has also been linked to severe emotional depression. Finally, other treatments for acne cause severe drying and irritation of the skin for many patients.
