plagues approximately 20% of the population, most commonly people with an influx
of hormones such as teenagers and pregnant women. While there are topical creams
and oral drugs that can help, for some people these solutions do not work or do
not work well enough. Acne
is caused by bacteria multiplying in the sebaceous glands that surround hair follicles
resulting in symptoms from the common pimple to severe acne. The key is to get
rid of the bacteria while not harming the skin. Some people use topical creams,
special cleansers or even opt for oral medication. However these solutions do
not work for everybody for a myriad of reasons. Acne
appears in various shapes, sizes, and colors:
whitehead - small, white lump in the skin . blackhead - small,
black lump in the skin. pustule - pus-filled, dome-shaped bump
papule - small, solid bump, raised slightly above the skin.
Treatment
Options: Chemical
peels are chemical treatments to produce an improved appearance
of the face. Chemical peels produce controlled injury to the skin that promotes
the growth of new skin with an improved appearance. Many different chemicals are
used including glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid, Jessners
solution, and phenol. The different chemical solutions produce different degrees
of injury to the skin. Superficial peels (e.g. glycolic acid) produce very superficial
injury confined to the epidermis. Superficial peels can help improve conditions
such as acne and dyschromia.
Accutane
is the only drug that has the potential to clear severe acne permanently after
one course of treatment. A member of a class of drugs known as retinoids, Accutane
is highly effective. But it doesn't work for everyone, and some patients need
more than one course of treatment. Accutane has adverse effects in some cases.
The drug is known to cause miscarriage and severe birth defects. Patients taking
Accutane may develop potentially serious problems affecting a number of organs,
including the liver, intestines, eyes, ears, and skeletal system. And some patients
taking Accutane have developed serious psychiatric problems, including depression. Laser
Treatments have been introduced to treat acne problems without
the side effects of Accutane. Most of these lasers use a special type of light
that kills the bacteria known to cause acne. Treatments such as the Clearlight
laser, Smoothbeam laser, & Blu-U Acne laser have proven to be very successful
in treating severe cases of adult acne. Find
